"Caroline Still Anderson" (1848-1919)

Her father,William still,the son of fugitive slaves,became a successful businessman,abolitionist,and prominent figure in the Philadelphia station of the Underground Railroad.In fact,he conducted "passengers,"or escaped slaves,to the New York homes of prominent black abolitionist David Ruggles,Jermain Loguen,and Frederick Douglass.In 1883 William published his seminal work,The Underground Railroad,which recorded many of the authentic events of escaped slaves in the railroad's history.In  1860 William had invested in the coal-mining business.By 1867 his Lehigh and Schuylkill Coal Business was flourishing and provided him a respectable income.Having achieved prominence and financial security for his family.William was able to send his daughter to Mrs.Henry Gordon's Private School and the Friends Raspberry Allen School for her early education.In 1861 Caroline entered the Institute for Colored Youth,now Cheyney State College,in Pennsylvania and went on to complete her high school education.Caroline was almost sixteen years when she entered Oberlin College in 1865.While a student at Oberlin some of her expenses were paid by her father while remaining fees were paid from other support.She graduated from the Oberlin
