"Reaction of Some Former Slaves"

Slaves bluntly displayed their reaction to years of slavery. Aunt Delia, a cook with a North Carolina family,revealed that for a long time she had secretly gained retribution for the indignity of servitude."How many times, I spit in the biscuits and peed in the coffee just to get back at them mean whites folks!" In Goodman Mississippi,a slave named Caddy learned she was free rushed from the field to find her owner."Caddy threw down that hoe, she marched herself  then,she looked around and found her mistress.Caddy went over to the mistress,she flipped up her dress and told her to do something.She it was mean and ugly. This what she said:Kiss my ass!" On the other hand,some slaves especially elderly ones, were fearful and unprepared for freedom.On a South Carolina plantation, an older black woman refused to accept emancipation."I ain't no free nigger! I is got a marster and mistress! dee right dar in de great house.Ef you don' b'lieve me, go dar an' see."
