"Allan Glaisyer Minns" {October 19,1858-1930)

He was a Black British doctor and politician and the first man to become a mayor in England.He was elected Mayor of Thefford Norfolk in 1904.


He was the youngest son of John Minns: born in Inagua Bahamas.He was one of nine children of John & Opheila (nee Bunch.His paternal granddaddy,also John Minns,and emigrated from England to the Bahamas where he married Rosette,a former slave.His eldest brother was Dr.Pembroke Minns.Alan was educated at Nassau Grammar School and Guy's Hospital London.M.R.C.S.Eng;Lond,Medical Officer Theford Workhouse & Theford District of Theford Union.Hon.Medical Officer Theford Cottage Hospital.Alan was a member of the British M.A. & Norwich Medico Chirugical Society;President of Horticultural Society;Mayor of Theford 1904-05--06.Dr.Minns registered with the British Medical Association on February 14,1984.His qualifications were MRCS (1881),and LRCP (1984).


Alan was based in Theford from 1885-1923,when he moved to Donking.He was twice married;first to Emily Pearson in 1888 and secondly to Gertrude Ann Morton in 1896.He had children by both wives.
