"Dr. A.C. Jackson

A 40-year-old nationally renowned surgeon living at 523 N. Detroit Ave.was
murdered in the Black Wall Street Tulsa massacre.Tulsa had a hospital with 15 physicians,nurses, other support staff.

Dr.Jackson transcended,the color line.He was christened the most able Negro surgeon in America by the Mayo brothers (of Mayo clinic fame),treated patients of both races.


He was worth $100,000 and was in every sense a good citizen.Dr. A.C. lived on what was one of  the most exclusive blocks in all of Greenwood.His neighbors   Booker T.Washington High School principal E.W.Woods, Tulsa Star publisher A.J,Smitherman and physician  R.T.Bridgewater.

Born in Memphis the and raised in Guthrie,where his daddy was a law officer,Dr.Jackson graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville,practiced for a while in Tulsa and Claremore,then trained as a surgeon in Memphis.His work was such that he attracted the attention of the Mayo Brothers,and in 1919 he returned to Tulsa is a specialist in "chronic diseases and surgery for women."


Despite the increasing gunfire,Dr.Jackson had decided to remain inside of his handsome home along the shoulder of Stanpipe Hill.When an officer of the home guards who knew Dr.Jackson assured him that if he would surrender he would be protected.This Dr.Jackson did.


The officer sent him under guard to Convention Hall,where African Americans were being placed for protection.Unforttunately,en route to the hall, Dr.Jackson was shot and killed in cold blood.A group of armed whites arrived on his front lawn,Dr.Jackson apparently walked out the side door of his home with his hands up,saying,"Here I am boys,don't shoot.


The officer who had assured Dr. Jackson of protection "stated "Dr.Jackson was able,cleancut man.He did only what any red-blooded man would have done under similar circumstances in defending his home,
